Based on a true story, the film had its world premiere at the Heartland International Film Festival in Indianapolis, IN, to a sold-out audience on Saturday, October 8, 2022
Synopsis
Brilliant but emotionally reserved Caro Drake comes to Oxford with the sole goal of earning a doctorate, but through a stormy friendship with a charming young man, she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love. Carolyn Weber, author of the book on which the biographical novel is based, was in attendance, along with actress Rose Reid, who played Caro Drake in the film, and other members of the production.
I knew nothing about the film or the book – I was invited by friends
Christmas Eve in My Hometown Screenplay: Stanley William Zabka and Donald Upton Cast: Eddie Fisher (1951 recording). A fascinating film about the intellectual, emotional, philosophical, and spiritual maturation and change of an American Oxford student.
A wonderful scene in Oxford, engaging hosts Rose Reid and Ruari O’Connor and great to see British actors like Phyllis Logan, Simon Callow and Ed Stoppard in supporting roles
I think the film would have benefited from additional short scenes of admiring the beauty of the Anglican churches, the choral music and also moments of introspection by Carolyn. Ostensibly the film falls into the Christian category but we don’t think of it as particularly religious – in fact the film deals with universal themes of community, connection and purpose.
Surprised by Oxford deserves a regular theatrical run and more/more targeted advertising
We are regular cinema goers and are amazed that the film didn’t get a big break and that it apparently only ran for two days.
