Synopsis
At 11:30 pm
on October 11, 1975, a ragtag group of young comedians and writers changed their television permanently. Find out what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes before the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live (1975). Matt Wood plays John Belushi on Saturday Night Live, see the other cast members and their real-life counterparts. .Dan Aykroyd was the only original SNL cast member to read the script. When the show starts, they have John Belushi come on screen 39 seconds late through the door. In reality, he came right in.. Lorne Michaels: Look, my name is Lorne Michaels, I’m the producer of “Saturday Night”: Lorne Michaels: [sarcastically] Yeah, the whole night movie starts with a quote from Lorne Michaels: “The show doesn’t go on because it’s done, it goes on because it’s 11:30.” Appeared in Eddie Murphy, le roi noir d'Hollywood (2023).
So it really narrows the audience down

This is the hardest review I’ve ever had to give because I don’t really know what to think of this movie. If you didn’t grow up watching SNL or know anything about the OG cast or how SNL started, you’re going to be incredibly confused, lost, and bored. I think the problem I have with this movie is that you basically have to know who everyone is from the beginning of SNL. Tons of name dropping and name dropping, no backstory, if you go in and want to watch a movie that explains it to you… this isn’t it, and you’ll probably walk out. I grew up watching SNL (but in the Sandler, Farley, Spade, and Farrell era).
It’s not at all inaccurate like some people say
If my dad hadn’t been obsessed with the older SNL and had it on all the time, I would have hated this. My husband grew up on MadTV, and even though there were some big names like Belushi, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd from the movies, he didn’t know who anyone else was. We had to come home to watch the first episode, and I had to explain a lot of things he didn’t understand. Like the relationship with Lorne and his wife and the connection with Aykroyd there. Most people would have no idea, even though the casting is incredible, I laughed at some parts, although I think it had the potential to be a little funnier. Most of the stuff was true, but some of it didn’t happen THAT night. The actors were absolutely amazing, and the 70s vibe and filming style was amazing.
It really felt like you were immersed
I felt a little stressed out, I don’t even drink and I left thinking “I need a drink, I feel like I just had a really exhausting day at work”. I recommend watching the first episode before you go if you haven’t seen it in a while. They really nail some of the scenes, it’s incredible. Unfortunately I think this movie bombed but they did a really bad job of making it watchable for anyone who is now considered “boomerang” age or close. A lot of people don’t watch movies in theaters anymore, are dead or are now stuck in Jesus. They get offended by things they probably didn’t in 1975. Obviously some people love it but I would guess that could be far fetched.
I honestly think even if I had watched it from home I would have been distracted
You might enjoy it if you research the beginning of SNL first and know what they all looked like but it’s a lot of work I wouldn’t recommend watching in theaters if you even think you’re lost, you are. My husband and I were the only ones in the theater, not a single other person, and I caught him scrolling through his phone a couple of times. I’ve never seen him do that in a movie, so I know he was bored, so I give it a 10/10 for the acting and the acting, and for the excellent capture of the era.
