Synopsis
On an island of the haves and have-nots, teenager John B asks his three best friends to search for a legendary treasure linked to his father’s disappearance. Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline and their “OBX”; the actors quiz each other on the best lines from their popular Netflix series. Filming took place in Charleston, South Carolina; it was originally supposed to be filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina..
So what’s not to like!?
After watching all 3 seasons of Outer Banks, I can’t deny that I had fun and was entertained: all the episodes are full of adventure, treasure hunting and chasing bad guys, all in exotic locations and with a few romantic twists. among the young and attractive cast. Well, I have some reservations too.
And of course, the silly nicknames, like JJ and Pope and John B (what’s the B for anyway?)
All the events are extremely far-fetched and unrealistic: like how this group of teenage friends manages to escape from the police or heavily armed criminals time and time again, often in the middle of a hail of bullets but always without injury; or how they solve mysterious mysteries (like hidden treasures or the location of the legendary El Dorado) with the snap of a wrist or thanks to unfortunate coincidences. The young actors are ostensibly there to illustrate the importance of true friendship, but their youthful behavior gradually gets on your nerves, with all the dude-talk and baseball cap-flipping that can’t be avoided. They all look good, but the acting is adequate, with only Drew Starkey standing out as the troubled Rafe and Rudy Pankow being quite convincing as the resourceful JJ with ADHD.
In reality, this is more of a show for teenagers
, barely exceeds the realms of The Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. Maybe, as a reasonably grown-up person, I shouldn’t watch it at all, but hey, sometimes it’s nice to go with the flow and enjoy it without overthinking it. The very last scene of season 3 set the stage for another season, and I bet I won’t be able to resist it.
