When the glass is visible on his feet, he is wearing socks
Synopsis
After witnessing a strange, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced that he is being threatened by a strange entity. A few days before the film’s September 30, 2022 release, the cast appeared at various baseball games sitting down behind home plate, standing motionless and smiling, staring into the camera, and not moving despite the understandable concern of fans in the Smile jerseys in the crowd. Another soon appeared in the background with the audience during the Today show. At about the 31-minute mark, Rose breaks the glass when her alarm goes off. When he checks the door a few seconds later, he is wearing lace-up shoes. Based on what happens later in the party, there are several continuity issues that are not necessarily “bugs,” but may actually be intentional to show “discontinuities” in Rose’s consciousness/mentality.

One day, Laura, a young student, is brought in for observation
After witnessing the brutal suicide of her professor, she seems to be suffering from extreme post-traumatic stress disorder. As Rose talks to Laura, she becomes more and more afraid, claiming that the invisible creature is going to kill her. He suddenly calms down and smiles unnaturally before slitting his throat. Later, strange events convince Rose that she is being stalked by a creature; and that he is the next victim. Shocking horror, Parker Finn’s Smile is a chilling study in the lasting effects of trauma. Finn’s story asserts that trauma affects every aspect of life and can be passed on to others through action.
They aren’t here because they reinforce Rose’s paranoia
Although comparisons to David Robert Mitchell’s It Follows are inevitable, Parker’s film’s thesis feels fresh and innovative. Traumatic effects – such as hallucinations, paranoia and guilt – are cleverly woven into Finn’s story, adding to its psychological horror. The film is suspenseful and has an intoxicating horror atmosphere throughout. Although the ending is implausible, the journey there is gripping and grim. Finn makes excellent use of jump scares, which often seem like a cheap way to shock the audience. Her character is strong, as is her dialogue, and we believe in Rose and can empathize with her, even though we’re not sure we can trust its reality.
Likewise, Charlie Sarroff’s unusual camerawork accentuates the unsettled atmosphere of the picture
Culturally relevant and confusing, the Finnish film is a wild and devilish journey. For horror to succeed, good sound design is needed; Finn’s sound department has created an immersive and disturbing horror environment. Cristobal Tapia de Veer’s score enhances the unsettled atmosphere, becoming chaotically dissonant as Rose descends deeper and deeper into paranoid fear. Reminiscent in part of Dario Argento and Goblin’s score for ‘Suspiria,’ Tapia de Veer’s work adds tremendously to the film’s impact. His distinctive and creative use of low angles, handheld shots, and zooms heightens the sense of unpredictable instability. Directed by Finn, his lighting design provides contrast and atmosphere, while his image composition further enhances the film’s horror, using symmetry, asymmetry, and negative space to create imbalance, tension, and emptiness; as the scene requires.
